Lindsay`s Diary - Final Entry

Day 4: Months after the downside gave back the utilities, my wish came true.  One day while walking with Becky, I heard a voice calling my name from one of the man holes from the "war".  So I checked it out and it's Talon!  Then, yet again, I ditched Becky and went with Talon into the tunnels to find the ladders that led topside.  In fact, the ladder climbing took around 15 minutes to get to the top.

When we were topside, Talon showed me the water tanks and houses on the roof tops.  "It was getting crowded down there so I convinced them that the sky was above the topside." he said in confidence.  I was in shock "It won`t work."  ''It already has." he said as he grabbed a mirror and shined the light to other buildings and other buildings shined while I was just hanging my mouth wide open.  "30 families in 30 buildings" he said.  I said ''well you can't really say you're downside anymore.''  ''Well what should we be called?'' responded Talon. "How about Highsiders?'' I said.  He liked it and I asked what I wanted to ask since I got up here.  "Will I ever see you again?"  "So many of these buildings look alike, but I think you can find us if you needed to.''  I knew what it meant.  It meant that yes, I could find him, but he was asking to not find the place.  Because if his people were to survive, in either the depths below or the rafters above, they must be left alone.  The touching of both their worlds almost destroyed the downsiders.  Now I knew I'd have to let him go.

Talon`s Diary - Day 3

Day 3:  In the soft walls Lindsay visited.  She talked about a way to get me free and gave me what I call now the "folder of truths" and kissed me goodbye as this was maybe one of the last times I would ever see her.  When I read the story of the crazy engineer of the name of Alfred Beach who built this place, and how the outcasts went to live in the downside and taught their kids to hate the topside, it made me feel like everything I ever knew was a lie.  I cried and threw everything to the floor.  I picked it back up and told the guard, "I wish to be let go."  The guard was scared because I came back from the dead.  After the third time asking, he did it.  To see if this folder was telling the truth or not, I knew exactly where to go...

I walked down a flight of stairs to a floor burning with fire lit by gas, and I knew where I was and needed to be.  The first rune.  And in there were the rune sentries guarding it.  I approached and stopped just out of attacking length.  "If you take one step closer, we will kill you.'' said one of the sentries. I showed them the folder and say I must be allowed in.  "Impossible" said another sentry.  ''If you were one of them you would be in there no matter what your paper says."  ''Nevertheless, I must pass'' I replied.  "Only the most-beloved are allowed in.'' said the other sentry. That is why I must pass.  It took a moment before the guards noticed what I suggested (that they can make me most- beloved by a turn of a gas key).  Then one broke his stance and took the key from his neck and let me pass.  When I saw the chamber it was a cemetery, and there was one big sign and it said...

Railborn`s Diary - Day 2

Day 2: Today I am a changed man.  It happened when I was talking to Gutta.  She barely wanted to look at me for what I did to Talon.  And when I tried to be like a leader and said "I do not need to explain my actions," she said I sounded like my father and wasn't impressed.  "The way Talon ran into that crowd-That impressed me,"she said "because he wasn't just doing it for himself."  "I can be like that, when I'm most-beloved." I replied. She sounded like she was swallowing ice when she said "no-one will be.  The war didn't work.  The world is coming to the end."  Then...it did.

At first it was quiet.  Then an explosion blew off the roof...then the blindness...and the ringing in my ears made it worse.  Then i noticed... where was Gutta?  I looked and looked until I saw her and put my ear on her chest for a sign of a heart beat.  I pulled away because it had become warm and bloody.  I looked up and saw men talking about topsider things and then I became something I wasn't and screamed so loud that both the topside and downside heard.  I climbed up and hurled bricks and stones and the men ran away.  I went down and picked up Gutta and thought about these topsider healers that can cheat death.  I ran with her to the healers.  They asked us what happened and all I said was, ''the war."  They just said "what war?", took Gutta and inserted tubes and medical devices into her.  I just waited.

Railborn's Diary - Day 1

Day 1: Today the entire downside went to the Hall of Action to figure out what to do about the invasion of the topside.  I suggested to cut off the water, gas and the electricity.  After a moment of silence, everyone cheered and slapped me on the back for my good idea. Then something that I thought could never happen... just happened.

After a few moments later, the person that I squealed on, the person with his shirt ripped and his back bloodied, walked into the hall  His name was Talon. "I have experienced the topside!'' Talon yelled as people screamed in shock.  One of the wise ones said,''what was your vision?''  Talon responded,"my vision was a vast world with more people than one can count in one day.","and it all depends on us!" I replied to keep it on the war plan.  "Talon took a deep breath and said,''or maybe not.''  It felt like I got punched in the face.  "ENOUGH! Railborn what should we do with him?" yelled the wise ones in fury.  I said,"this vision of the topside sounds like the ravings of a lunatic, so I say he belongs in the soft walls (like the padded walls of an insane asylum) until his mind returns.''  As Talon was being dragged away all I could say was,''I`m sorry.''

Lindsay's Diary - Day 4

Day 4: Today my father's job may have just destroyed the downside as one of the dump trucks fell through to the downside and the world is saying that it is an archeological find.  When Talon saw that on the TV, he ran to the downside saying that the fates were coming back at him.  Not waiting even a single moment, I chased him to the tunnels again and lost him trying to use my fine hairs on my arm to direct me with the breeze (the way downsiders get around in the dark).  Then a train almost hit me until Talon pushed me against the wall until the train passed.

When I saw that his chain shirt was ripped off, I felt his back and it was bleeding all the way down. Then he led me to the nearest ladder and said, "You will never come looking for me or even think about me."  I replied "What do you mean? What are you saying?" "It is as though we never met" - then he vanished.  I felt lost as if I was back in the tunnel again and he was lost forever. Or so he thought.

Talon's Diary - Day 2

Day 2: Today was the most exciting day of my whole life!  After I was fine from the cold waters I got this coat with tons of topside money.  And went on a miniature train in a place called a carnival!  It's name was a "roller coaster" and it was full of joy, fear and mystery.  After that, I went to sleep in a free green box called a dumpster!  I could see the moonlight sky soar above me, but I still don't know how the moon stays up there. Then it got better...

After the nap, I took a cab to Lindsay's  place and learned a topside catchphrase - "you can stick it where the sun don't shine."  When I got there it was morning so I took another nap to wait if she will come to her house soon.  Then, later, Lindsay and her brother woke me up and she said that she would give me some notes that she took for class when I was sick and took me to her room.  When we got there I told her about what happened and how I wanted to see the whole topside!  Then we looked into each others eyes and kissed.

Talon's Diary - Day 1

Day 1: Today has been a very... very long day.  Somehow the wise ones (the main authority of the downside) found out that I brought a topsider to the downside.  I don't know how because the only people who saw was Railborn and Gudda (my friends).  They were going to execute me.  They didn't even give me a last meal or a moment of silence to think of what I've done.

After we walked down the tunnel to San Fransisco, they put me into a pipe and made my parents watch as one of the wise ones went to a lever.  He said "do you have any last words"? and I said "tell Railborn that he can have my coin collection."  Then he pulled the lever and water started to tinkle down my neck and all I remember is saying "mom dad I'm scared!"  Then they flushed me down that pipe for miles on end thinking that my death was to go through this pipe until I die.  Until I fell into this bottomless pit full of water sucking me down until a lady dragged me above the water like she resists the water and pulled me to the land.  Then I finally knew where I was... the surface.

Lindsay's Diary - Day 3

Day 3: Today was the best and the worst day of my life.  I was walking with my new friend "The Welcomer", Becky Perckerling, and then I see Talon spying on me in the gutters.  When I get a good look at him my hair got suck in his "home made" shirt and he pulled me into the gutter (well before almost being crushed by a bus).  Of course I told Becky to leave and she seemed very offended like I was trying to avoid her.  Well after that, he took me to see the Downside.

When I got to the downside, I was shocked at the amount of beauty out of our everyday junk!  They have everything from ritual chambers to ecosystems in sewers!  Apparently this place was here for a long time because Talon said it was always there.  Then he started getting nervous because Downsiders were coming.  When we were trapped by the shadows of people coming, he put me into a ladder shaft.  And when I stayed there the ladder broke and I went falling into a huge sewer.  When eventually he fell, we went to look for an exit when we saw a giant herd of cattle in the sewers!  Out of all the places the sewers!  We ran and saw this ladder and barely made it until the Downsiders came.  Talon said I was a faller (a topsider that is welcomed into the downside society) when they asked, and when they believed that, we went back up to the topside.

Lindsay's Diary - Day 2

Day 2: Today is New Years and something creepy and mysterious in a good way happened.  First the party was boring for me but not for anyone else, they were having fun with their dates.  Then my brother goes around with his attitude basically fitting in with the older guys. when he starts mimicking our dad's plans and job like it was some trash.  I yelled at him in front of everybody, but after the silence ended they went to watch the ball drop.  So I went to my room to watch it on my TV alone.

Then the creepy part happened.  A man with old raggedy clothes (he looked cleaner and more civilized then the average poor guy) covers my mouth saying not to scream! Then my mom's self-defense kicked in and I grabbed his hand, flipped him to the ground and pepper sprayed him.  I felt sorry after.  He seemed to not know what pepper spray or many of the modern day things were.  When Todd (my brother) came in he cuffed him to the bed with his bike chain.  after I sprayed him with water he said that his sister was very sick and needed medicine.  Even though it was illegal, I gave it to him and let him go before the cops came and blamed it on Todd for not tightening the chain tight enough.

Lindsay`s Diary - Day 1

Day 1:  Today my mom is sending me to my dad's because she is going to Africa.  It was a long story having to do with a divorce and mom not being able to take me to Africa.  Dad is knocking down a wall between two identical buildings to make one giant one - even though there was a giant gap between the buildings on the upper floor.  I could see that it was there because of that hole at the end of the hallway with a plastic sheet over it.

Then there's my brother.  Well he doesn't have any genetic relation between me and him.  His mom was a dancer and had him.  After that she met my dad and then later a tragic accident on the stage left her lifeless.  Then my dad took him in and spoiled him rotten.  Now he's a smoker.  Even after my dad gives him a 45 minute talk, he didn't get a word through that head because the next day his breath wreaked!
